Loisiijo Community

Building of the lodge was started in 2005 but it was never completed. Time, dust,& wind has degraded the buildings as they sat unoccupied. Error in technical design didn’t help much either, so it was decided to keep the bedrooms main structure and to make them more open to the outside breeze.

Some of the wood was also badly attacked by `dudus` ( swahili for insects). So frames and doors had to be rebuilt. We thought it would take on more character with some `Masai` flair.

The reception area being opened up to create the new main entrance which was lacking in the original building.

Today a couple of hundred Masai from the Shompole community gathered at the Loisiijo Lodge grounds. Joining them were the Government Area Chief, various community leaders and a comittee from the African Conservation Center, and of course myself and Robyn.

Speeches went on for while, a few goats were slaughtered and eaten. I was handed ceremoniously a cheque of 1.7 million shillings granted by donors to start the rehabilitation work on the lodge.

Now we can start the work of rebuilding the small lodge. Once finished the lodge will provide work and revenue to the Shompole community.
